There are certain words in the English language that are generally only ever used in the news. I was reminded of this early this morning, when reading about a “plucky” duck on BBCi – who on earth uses “plucky” in normal conversation? Then there’s “rumpus”, a favourite word of my local newspaper and again one that no one actually uses.

In fact, I can’t see either word now without thinking of Terry Pratchett’s The Truth and smirking cynically to myself.
